Why Your Factory Quote Is Probably Wrong (And What You’re Missing)

Published Apr 8, 2026

Most quote problems are hidden in assumptions. Here is how to spot what is missing before you place an order.

Most people focus on price.

Experienced operators focus on what is missing.

The Problem

A quote looks simple:

$2.10 per unit

But that number often hides:

  • packaging assumptions
  • material substitutions
  • unrealistic MOQs
  • missing process costs

What Gets Left Out

1. Packaging

Factories often assume:

  • basic polybag
  • no inserts
  • minimal protection

Your actual requirement may be very different.

2. Material Grade

Two products can look identical but:

  • different resin quality
  • different durability
  • different finish

If it is not specified, it will be optimized for cost.

3. Yield Loss

Scrap and defects are rarely included clearly.

That cost shows up later:

  • delays
  • rework
  • replacement units

4. Tooling Reality

Low tooling quotes can mean:

  • short lifespan
  • poor consistency
  • hidden rework cost

5. Communication Cost

This is the invisible one.

Bad communication leads to:

  • wrong specs
  • repeated corrections
  • wasted cycles

What Good Looks Like

A real quote should answer:

  • what exactly is included?
  • what assumptions are being made?
  • what changes the price?

If you cannot answer those, the quote is not complete.

Final Thought

Cheap quotes are rarely cheap.

Clear quotes are.

If you have ever been surprised after placing an order, it usually started here.
